Corpus Christi in Bari

Photo Excursions #13

Corpus Christi in Bari

You’re probably wondering if I am some sort of a church photographer, given the number of religious content in my posts. This is not my thing at all, but sometimes it so happens that such events are the only events that happen where I live, so there is not much choice.

This time, I have a set of photos I took on family vacation a couple of years ago, when visiting the beautiful Puglia region in Italy. Bari is the central town of the region, and by pure accident I found myself in front of the largest church in the old town right before the Corpus Christi procession started. Being me, I asked my wife and kids if I can have half an hour for myself, and I disappeared in the crowds to do some photography. The procession was very colourful (hence all the photos are in black and white), and slightly different from what I am used to seeing in Poland. You will notice the surprising number of people on wheelchairs and accompanying nurses. I don’t know if it is characteristic to Bari or Puglia only, or if this is a custom across entire Italy, but it is a beautiful tradition that is basically about including the elderly and disabled in the ceremonies and holidays people observe. A token of care and gratitude from the society.

I hope you enjoy the photos!

Till the next time!
